The King in Mt. Peca.
A magical mountain; his safe shelter.
Psssst! Is there someone sleeping there?!
It's Matija Korvin – King Matjaž. He has been sleeping here in the mountain for centuries.
It is said that there was no greater hero than King Matjaž, who fought with unwavering courage against the dangerous Turks. Long ago, as he was losing the battle, he fled and the mountain – our Peca – opened up to him and provided shelter for him and his soldiers. To this day it is said he is sitting in the middle of a cave at a stone table, around which his beard grows. Only when King Matjaž's beard wraps itself around the table nine times, will he wake up and come back, return to the golden times and overcome all the world's injustices.
So, let's continue in peace, here in close proximity to his cave at the Dom na Peci mountain hut, so we don't disturb King Matjaž!
There's someone else who likes peace – a brown bear – 'a crosses-border commuter' who has a natural shelter here. This master of Peca, who came from Slovenia, is once again slowly multiplying in the Karawanken-Karavanke mountains and doesn't want to be disturbed.
We can also express our enthusiasm for the stunning views by admiring its beauty in silence.
Since, if there's no sign of either the bear or the king, we can take a look at some other real wonders of the geological history of the Earth – what a magnificent landscape the Drava glacier created.
On the other stages, there are also special views that were created by the movement of glaciers. Great, isn't it?
By the way: only a chosen few are said to have found their way to the mountain cave where King Matjaž sleeps ... Who knows whether or not we'll perhaps get near to him on our way? Perhaps a hairy-leaved alpenrose or alpine wormwood will give us a hint?
However, we must be aware that the mountain is forever changing its shape – the limestone is being eroded away by the wind and weather. So, one never knows ... there are undoubtedly many more caves hiding in the underworld here, not just that of King Matjaž.
