The Črna Zipline

ARE THE BIRDS THE ONLY ONES WHO FLY TO AFRICA FROM EUROPE?

On the summit of the Navrški vrh, on the southern side of the Petzen, in the municipality of Črna na Koroškem, the instructor fastens me to the seel cable, opens the safety door and lets gravity takes care of the rest of this thrilling adventure.

But let’s start at the beginning: 200 million years ago, a small part of the African Continental Plate began moving northwards towards the European Plate. The tectonic plates collided and as a consequence, the Alps were formed. The boundary between the plates runs in the middle of the Karawanken Mountains, and is called the Periadriatic Fault System. And runs right through this valley.

And here I am suspended from a giant steel cable 250 m above the ground as I accelerate to a speed of 120 km/h. I’m flying from Europe to Africa — geologically at least.

The view is fantastic. The feeling too.
